Brisbane South Toy Library
Membership Responsibilities

Excited to jump in and join our toy libary? You probably have some questions about what it means to be a member.

Please read through our Membership Responsibilities below and talk to us if you have any questions. Our General Policies & Procedures can be found towards the bottom of this page.

Membership Benefits

Membership entitles you to borrow up to 6 items for up to 4 weeks at a time with no additional fee.

One item can be a small toy, a set (e.g a train set or a box of blocks) or a big toy (e.g. a ride-on car or outdoor play gym). Some smaller toys are combined in one bag or box and count as one toy.

Safety & Batteries

All our toys and/or toy bags are labelled with necessary safety warnings. Please ensure you familiarise yourself with these. Helmets must be worn on certain scooters and bikes, you may view our helmet waiver and release here or via the link in your welcome email.

No toys are stored with batteries. We assume all battery functions work when fresh batteries are used - if this is not the case please let us know.

Cleaning & Care

Members are required to return toys in a clean condition. Here is a quick guide to cleaning our toys:

  • Wash the toy with warm soapy water.

  • You might need to use a toothbrush to get into nooks. Rinse.

  • Toys with batteries, baby rattles and wooden toys should not be submerged in water. Please wipe these toys thoroughly with a damp cloth and pat dry.

  • Leave in the sun to dry, or dry with a clean tea towel.

  • Wipe over wooden puzzles with a hot soapy damp (not wet) rag.

  • If your child has been ill, please disinfect the toy before returning. This can be done with antibacterial wipes or spray. Please don’t soak in disinfectant as this can remove the colour from some plastics.

  • Cloth toys and costumes will have cleaning instructions on the tag. Some can only be spot cleaned, others can go in the washing machine.

  • Outdoor and sandpit toys must be cleaned well to be stored inside. Immerse in soapy water in the laundry tub and then rinse under running water to remove sand.

  • Please do not leave ride on toys outside in the rain or hot sun.

Missing Pieces, Broken Pieces & Lost Toys

Missing Pieces

Members are responsible for counting pieces of toys on the day of borrowing. If you identify that a toy is incomplete (missing pieces), please email or message Brisbane south Toy Library immediately with the toy number and correct details. There is a $5 per piece replacement fee for any missing pieces, unless otherwise stated on the toy. You may borrow the toy for an additional 4 week period to try and locate any missing pieces. If the toy becomes inoperable due to the missing piece/s, you will need to replace the toy or pay a negotiated replacement fee.

Lost & Broken Toys

If a toy is lost, you will need to replace the toy or pay a negotiated replacement fee. You may borrow the toy for an additional 4 week period to try and locate it.

If a toy breaks due to reasonable wear and tear or poor condition there will be no charge. If a toy is broken due to inappropriate use or neglect including damage by pets, you will be charged the full cost of replacing the toy or you may replace the toy yourself.

Overdue Loans

Toys must be returned on or before the 4 week hire period. A late fee of $5 per toy will be charged per week overdue. Please email or message Brisbane South Toy Library if you have difficulty returning items. Regular toys may be renewed for another 4 week period.

Please Note: Brisbane South Toy Library Committee reserves the right to reject or terminate a membership. Formal acceptance of new members occurs at the next scheduled committee meeting after the application has been received.
